working at it - three artists

Daniel Griffith has been busy this past Spring. Double click on images to see them larger. Click video below

He gathers
materials
that catch his eye.
He is drawn
to texture
and form.
His workshop is inside his mother's house,
on a farm outside of De Witt,
east corner of Carroll County,
in north central Missouri.

Click video above. Here is a sampling of the constructions he has assembled.

Karl Marxhausen is gearing up for his August 5th art opening at the Burkholder Project in Lincoln, Nebraska.
video
In above video, he is carving on the first of a three plate linocut. He says it will have multiple colors on it. Video is three minutes and 40 seconds.

This proof with three color areas took three plates and three impressions to make. Marxhausen is trying to lineup a five color linocut print. Below, a proof does not have all the parts lined up. He plans to have the final print at his show.

Joe Tonnar is looking for a fresh take on previous pastel designs. Here, he is enlarging the designs on a larger wooden panel. He uses charcoal to put the design in place free-handed, without mechanical assistance.
Video part one is 4 minutes long.

Video part two is 3 minutes long.
Joe talks about the brands of oil paint he uses. Like many of us, Joe wants to be pleased with his efforts. Working on paper is easier, because if it does not work out he can simply throw it away. With oil paint on wooden supports there is more pressure. A design that does not pan out means he has to repaint the board and wait for it to dry. On his day off from his day job at the Country Club, Joe put in three hours of art-making, with the ambience of this favorite Classic Rock music station.

That is it for now in Carrollton.
